Abstract
Protohermes van der Weele, 1907 is the largest genus of the holometabolous insect order Megaloptera, currently with 88 species distributed through the Oriental and Palaearctic regions. Here we describe six new species of the genus, namely P. annamitensis sp. nov., P. bifidus sp. nov., P. phani sp. nov., P. subsinuolatus sp. nov., P. tenuis sp. nov., and P. tingtingae sp. nov. A total of four new synonyms are herein proposed, namely P. cavaleriei Navás, 1925 syn. nov., P. festivus Navás, 1932 syn. nov., P. flavipennis Navás, 1929 syn. nov. (all under P. xanthodes Navás, 1914) and P. triangulatus Liu, Hayashi & Yang, 2007 syn. nov. (under P. weelei Navás, 1925). Besides, a redescription of P. albipennis (Walker, 1853) is provided. Based on the updated taxonomy of the genus, here we propose three new species groups, i.e., P. infectus species group, P. sinuolatus species group and P. tonkinensis species group. As a result of these revisions, the genus comprises 90 species, most of which are classified into 15 species groups. The new findings emphasize the species diversity of Megaloptera from the Oriental region.
