Garra banensis, a new species of labeonine (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from the Tanintharyi drainage of southern Myanmar

  • Garra banensis sp. nov., a new species, is described from the Ban Chaung drainage, a tributary of Tanintharyi River in southeastern Myanmar. It is the first species of Garra formally described from the Tanintharyi drainage. Garra banensis sp. nov. is distinguished from other proboscis-bearing congeners in adjacent drainages of Southeast Asia by a combination of morphological characters, and well supported by phylogenetic analyses and genetic distance with COI gene. It can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters: snout rounded, transverse lobe present, nearly quadrate developed proboscis slightly upturned, central callous pad longer and its length 26.1–32.7% of head length, chest scaled, lateral-line scales 32–33, transverse scale rows above lateral line 4.5, transverse scale rows below lateral line 4.5, predorsal scales 9, circumpeduncular scales 12.
