Garra banensis, a new species of labeonine (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from the Tanintharyi drainage of southern Myanmar

  • Garra banensis sp. nov., new species, is described from the headwater of the Tanintharyi drainage in southern Myanmar. It is the first species of Garra recorded from the Ban Chaung drainage. Garra banensis sp. nov. is distinguished from other proboscis-bearing species of Garra in adjacent drainages of Southeast Asia by a combination of meristic traits, and well supported by phylogeny and genetic distance in COI gene. It can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters: rounded snout, transverse lobe present, prominent trapezoidal proboscis moderately upturned, two pairs of barbels, upper lip absent, lateral line scales 32-33, circumpeduncular scales 12.
